Summary

Chinese Cinderella is an autobiography for children based on the bestselling Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah。 Jung-ling's family considers her bad luck because her mother died giving birth to her。 They discriminate against her and make her feel unwanted yet she yearns and continuously strives for her parents' love。 Her stepmother is vindictive and cruel and her father dismissive。 Jung-ling grows up to be an academic child, with a natural ability for writing。 Only her aunt and grandfather offer her any love and kindness。 The story is of survival in the light of the mental and physical cruelty of her stepmother and the disloyalty of her siblings。 Jung-ling blossoms in spite of everything and the story ends as her father agrees to let her study in England。

I was interested to read about the experience of a Chinese girl during that time period but I found her book anticlimactic and a bit boring。 She should have included her comeback story and how her childhood experiences shaped her today。

Amazing, amazing book! Could not put it down! Every young girl should read this and be thankful for what God has given you because not everyone is given the same

Cried my way through this book。 No child should’ve had to endure what this one endured。 Looking forward to reading her adult book, Falling Leaves。

This is an incredible story and the author tells it so well。 The abuse she suffered was horrendous and very real。 I recognize it。 It really happened

This book was wonderfully written, I enjoyed learning things also in the book about China。 The opium wars and the occupation of Chine by the French and British。 We here didn't learn much about China in our world history class。 Adeline Yen Mah has written several books and I hope to find and read them all。 Her books are: Falling Leaves, Her memoir for adults。 Along the River Fantasy books。 Several stories she made up as a child。 Along the River。 Also, she wrote China: Land of Dragons and Emperors This book was wonderfully written, I enjoyed learning things also in the book about China。 The opium wars and the occupation of Chine by the French and British。 We here didn't learn much about China in our world history class。 Adeline Yen Mah has written several books and I hope to find and read them all。 Her books are: Falling Leaves, Her memoir for adults。 Along the River Fantasy books。 Several stories she made up as a child。 Along the River。 Also, she wrote China: Land of Dragons and Emperors。 Nonfiction overview of the History of China。 I hope to find them。 。。。more

Rating: 4/5I finished this in one sitting while volunteering at my local gallery。 Although I am well loved by my parents and am lucky enough to be studying in England as well, my heart is so torn for Adeline。 To be unloved and unwanted as a child hurts so much and I understand her frustration and feelings。 To see that she is happy and well loved right now settles the anger I felt against her Father and Niang。 A short but impactful autobiography, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone。

A short read that gives a small insight to the culture of Chinese society of the time, but primarily focuses on the Adeline's plight as an emotionally abused child。 It's really tragic what she had gone through。 Even being born to a well off family isn't able to ensure that one can enjoy those privileges。 I got angry for her, there was no reason for her to be treated the way she was。 I'm glad she got to get away from them eventually, but I wish we knew more of what happened afterwards。Really a tr A short read that gives a small insight to the culture of Chinese society of the time, but primarily focuses on the Adeline's plight as an emotionally abused child。 It's really tragic what she had gone through。 Even being born to a well off family isn't able to ensure that one can enjoy those privileges。 I got angry for her, there was no reason for her to be treated the way she was。 I'm glad she got to get away from them eventually, but I wish we knew more of what happened afterwards。Really a troubling read, doesn't offer much different of a view than I've seen in other biographies of this time in China。3/5 stars 。。。more

I first read this book when I was much younger, about 9 or 10 and now, so many years later, I am 20 and her story still resounds with me。 It is a book I can read in one sitting, and the way Adeline writes allows you to almost taste the fear and longing。 As someone from Hong Kong, I see my grandparents and great grandparents reflected in the behaviours and thoughts of her family, my own mother once spoke to me of her stepmother favouring her four “biological” children over her - so this book real I first read this book when I was much younger, about 9 or 10 and now, so many years later, I am 20 and her story still resounds with me。 It is a book I can read in one sitting, and the way Adeline writes allows you to almost taste the fear and longing。 As someone from Hong Kong, I see my grandparents and great grandparents reflected in the behaviours and thoughts of her family, my own mother once spoke to me of her stepmother favouring her four “biological” children over her - so this book really resonated with me。 。。。more

I read this book briefly when I was either in Year 6 or 7, but never got around to reading the rest 😂As I’ve stated in previous reviews of picking up books by either the op shops or street libraries and things, this was another one of these finds。I definitely didn’t think I was going to get through it as quick as I did but instead of having fun, I guess time flies when you read a book you enjoy 🙂It was a sad read, especially during the times when she wrote about when her stepmother abused her an I read this book briefly when I was either in Year 6 or 7, but never got around to reading the rest 😂As I’ve stated in previous reviews of picking up books by either the op shops or street libraries and things, this was another one of these finds。I definitely didn’t think I was going to get through it as quick as I did but instead of having fun, I guess time flies when you read a book you enjoy 🙂It was a sad read, especially during the times when she wrote about when her stepmother abused her and the family neglected her, but I was also able to relate to her in some of those times where she felt lonely and excluded。All in all, I loved this book, would recommend it for people who would like to get into memoirs ☺️ 。。。more
